What Are the Two Types of Exfoliators?

When it comes to exfoliation, you’ve got two options, chemical or physical.

First up, we have physical exfoliation, which is all about the hands-on approach. This method uses abrasive particles or tools, which can be more aggressive on the skin. While it can initially provide a satisfying feeling of smoothness, over time, it may lead to redness, irritation on the skins surface, potentially exacerbating skin concerns rather than improving them.

On the flipside, we have chemical exfoliation which is like a magic potion for your skin. Chemical actually refers to the active ingredients used in the formula, like Salicylic and Glycolic Acids as well as other AHAs and BHAs – you’ll be familiar with these ingredients already from our other skincare products like Glycolic Acid Toner and Salicylic Acid Cleanser.

The purpose of using these chemical ingredients in exfoliation products is to gently but effectively break down and loosen the ‘glue-like’ links that hold our dead skin cells together. This encourages the shedding of dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter looking skin underneath plus, with consistent use, it can help to visibly retexturize and even the skin’s appearance.
